Welcome to 2nd Grade!

I am very happy to be teaching second grade this year! I am enjoying the students, my new classroom, and the opportunity to teach with Ms. Vollmerhausen! Our classes have gotten together to celebrate a few of our September birthdays and will be working together this week on a project for Constitution Day.

Ms. Vollmerhausen teaches Math and Science to both classes each day. They are reviewing basic addition and subtraction and have been introduced to TouchMath, a useful tool to help children with their math facts. In Science the children have been learning about different types of plants, and their classroom looks like a mini-greenhouse. They've planted many different seeds and are anxious to see what grows.

I teach Reading, Spelling, and Phonics to both classes. This year grades K-3 began using the F.A.S.T. Reading Program, which encompasses all three subjects. Throughout the year, the children will be introduced to 25 different concepts, and there are individual books for each concept. Each spelling and phonics lesson goes along with the concept being covered. This week we worked on Concept 1, closed syllable words like job, led, and gas. We also began working on Concept 2, "consonant teams," which are -ch, -sh, -wh, -th, -qu, and -ng.
In Religion we are learning that our Church welcomes us. This goes along with the classroom environment we are working towards ... one where everyone feels welcome. We often talk about treating others as we want to be treated and making everyone feel like an important part of our 2nd grade "family."
